Wirepas Becomes an Energy Web Foundation Affiliate

Bringing decentralized mesh into the global energy blockchain ecosystem

Wirepas has joined the Energy Web Foundation (EWF), the world’s leading blockchain initiative in the energy sector, as an Affiliate. EWF is building an open-source, scalable blockchain platform—the Energy Web chain—specifically designed for the energy sector’s regulatory, operational, and market needs. The EW chain serves as a foundational digital DNA—a core infrastructure—on which the energy and blockchain communities can build and run their solutions. More than 30 companies are already building and testing apps on Tobalaba, the Energy Web’s test network.

Wirepas provides decentralized IoT connectivity through a wireless mesh approach that allows unprecedented scale, density, flexibility, and reliability. The company’s mission in the EWF community is to extend blockchain to the edge of the electricity network. The ultimate goal is for all Wirepas-connected devices to be whitelisted for publishing data to the EWF blockchain.

“With so much emphasis in the energy blockchain community focused on electrons, it’s easy to take the importance of connectivity for granted,” said Ewald Hesse, vice president of the Energy Web Foundation. “Wirepas becoming an EWF Affiliate will powerfully complement the rest of the Energy Web ecosystem, helping to unlock a future in which millions of connected edge devices are actively communicating with the Energy Web chain.”

A large barrier to the implementation of massive IoT in the energy and building sectors exists due to prohibitively high transaction costs for small-value transactions at scale. By using blockchain technology, the transaction costs can come down, allowing every consumer and device to become an active market participant.

The decentralized and autonomous philosophy of both Wirepas and EWF will allow multiple IoT use cases to be deployed in the energy sector. Together with EWF, Wirepas will be able to accelerate the transition towards a cleaner, more resilient, and more cost-effective energy system.
